  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Polly's Daughter -- A must read for anyone who never understood the war in Vietnam. : I learned more about the Vietnam war here than anyplace else. This book was of personal interest because I wore a POW bracelet ( Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Oldcabdriver -- A gripping story about a real American hero . . . : Sam Johnson's story of how he was shot down in Vietnam, tortured, and spent more time in solitary confinement than any American in history is a powerful tale of heroism, human endurance, hope, and faith. No, the book won't get an award for literature, but it is an easily-read, gripping story of a man's seven years in the Hanoi Hilton. I must confess. I've met Sam Johnson. And when I shook his hand, I was shocked by the sensation of feeling every broken bone in it, the result of countless acts of torture by his captors. His body is a wreck. But he almost always has a friendly, welcoming smile on his face. It's a book well worth reading. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2014 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Donald -- A great book - Must read. : Great book co written by Sam Johnson - all that you ever heard about the cruel captivity of the prisoners in North Vietnam is covered by a man who was there - not from interviews = Sam kept daily diary - What the Johnson and Nixon administrations did and how it effected the prisoners. If you read any book about this subject it needs to be this one. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from faith wendell -- Riveting : Love this ( Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2019 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from D. Paulsrud -- Informative and thought provoking. : I have read many books written by and about POW's during the Vietnam War and found this one to be a very good read. My only complaint was when he didn't name names on some of the prisoners who cooperated with the Vietnamese or who caused problems with other prisoners. (They are named in other books, so I know who they are, but if you are going to talk to them, go ahead and name them.) Over all it was a thought provoking book and give you some insight into the moral and physical make-up of one of the "hardliners" held prisoner in "Alcatraz". • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- A TRUE AMERICAN and MAN OF GOD! : His perseverance is astounding! Although his words are written here, you can also read what isn't written after suffering for 7 long years in that horrible camp. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from EB -- Enjoyed the book : Enjoyed the book, it is a different view of Vietnam than the combat stories we are accustomed to. I learned a few things about what was going on at the time, that I had been previously unaware of. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from John L Goldfluss -- Captive Warriors - An Incredible, Inspiring, Revealing Personal Account : Captive Warriors was an incredible, inspiring, revealing personal account of what our servicemen who became POWs of the North Vietnamese had to endure. It is told by Congressman Sam Johnson (Texas) (Col. USAF at the time) who spent almost seven years in the worst of their prison camps. If you want a glimpse into how love (of country and of family) and the strength of the human spirit (when there is a belief in God) can carry a person through times that you'd think no person could possibly survive, then read this book and be moved. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2011 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mr H. -- A Moving Story : A moving story of serious mis-treatment of Vietnam war US PoWs. I'd heard of the mis-treatment before but this brings it home with first-hand experiences. well written and without rancour - I doubt I could have been so even if I had been trerated so badly. The author dies very recently (May 2020) so quite poignant. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 5, 2020 )
